Shopify is a huge ecommerce platform which allows you to sell products to customers without ever actually having to handle the products yourself. Millions of dollars can be made. Shopify is booming and there are kids making more money selling things like phone cases online than people are making working full time in Canary Wharf. You have some serious power if you know how to use ecommerce (online shopping) correctly. Today I’ll outline the basics.
First you must choose a theme. Shopify allows you to set up an online shop, so you must have a product. What are you going to sell? Shoes, watches? Bags, tents? Research has shown that it is actually easier to find customers that are willing to purchase if you have a slight theme to your store rather than just ‘clothing’. Don’t be too specific (allow room for scalability) and decide on your theme.
When you’ve chosen a theme and a name for your store, sign up to Shopify. They’ll give you a 14 day free trial at first, then it becomes $30-per-month, so bare this in mind as you’ll have to earn $30 at least per month to break even – with hard work and patience this should be easy.
You now need to start filling up your store. Head over to AliExpress and search for some products. Then click on the ‘copy to Shopify’ button and all of the images provided by the seller on AliExpress will appear in your store. The beauty of this business model is that you do not need to actually buy the products beforehand and store them – simply upload images to your Shopify store, and when a customer places an order, then you go and buy this item on AliExpress. All you have to do is fill out the shipping details and AliExpress will take care of the rest. Simple.
Take this example: I upload images of $20 trainers to my Shopify store and I price them at $50. A customer places an order, so I then go over to AliExpress and buy these trainers for $20. I keep $30 profit. It’s that simple.
The hardest part is driving traffic to your store. You need to get your store out there so that people are aware of it. The two most effective ways seem to be through Instagram and Facebook. Build up an Instagram page and then drive traffic to your store (for info on how to grow your instagram read my blog on the topic.) Facebook ads are arguably more effective. Set up a business page on Facebook if you haven’t done so already. The first step you’ll want to take is clicking on the ‘pixels’ section and then copying your pixel ID number. Then head over to Shopify -> Online Store -> Preferences then paste your facebook pixel ID. This links your facebook to your Shopify store.
The creating of Facebook ads is a little more complicated so I will run through this in another blog.
I myself have been carrying out extensive research into dropshipping and ecommerce, and will hopefully be opening my own Shopify store later this year.
