Elon Musk. Probably THE MOST cutting edge of all entrepreneurs. A net worth of $20 billion, the potential ability to put civilisation on Mars by 2025 with SpaceX and he’s bringing a complete revolution to vehicles with Tesla. This man knows what he’s doing. So who better to get advice from as a young entrepreneur?
If I personally could have a conversation with any entrepreneur, for me it’d be a huge toss up between Elon Musk and Gary Vaynerchuk. Although very different in terms of their businesses, both are incredibly intelligent men who are with the times and understand technology better than most.
Recently I stumbled across a YouTube video in which a young entrepreneur had the privilege of meeting Elon in a group of roughly 5. One person asked ‘what is your advice for young entrepreneurs starting out like myself?’ I leant forwards, in anticipation of being blown away be Elon, for simply a few wise words from this man are capable of changing lives. I was however, initially extremely disappointed when Elon simply replied ‘Put it this way, if you need inspiring words… don’t do it.’
You see what I mean. A little underwhelming. Well, that’s what I thought at first until I really examined what he’d said. This advice served as a kind of filter. Elon was stood in front of a group of young aspiring entrepreneurs, and he knew that not all of them were suited or ready for entrepreneurship. If you’re discouraged by someone telling you not to do it, then you probably weren’t destined to do it in the first place. I believe Elon said this to motivate the true entrepreneurs in the group to prove him wrong.
I personally found great motivation in Elon’s few words. He himself was doubted and told not to create the businesses he has proven successful, so he’s giving young entrepreneurs the same advice he was given. It made me think long and hard about myself. When someone tells you not to do something, you can do one of two things: give up, or use it as motivation. Which would you do?
